The Broward County Veterans Council (BCVC) was established in 1977 by virtue of the common needs and interests of the Veteran and his/her family.  We are a federation of 57 organizations in Broward and Palm Beach Counties operating under an umbrella plan of coordination that acts to protect and implement benefits for the veteran.

Working through the Division of Veteran Services, the Department of Veteran Affairs and our Political Representatives, we insure that a high level of efficiency exists in the handling of Veterans and Veteran issues, and we are constantly seeking to improve the conditions of the Veterans.

As a result of the above, the BCVC and the VA Representatives hold monthly meetings to discuss the problems of the Veteran and what can be done to improve their condition.

The BCVC has been credited with many accomplishments over the past twenty years, including spearheading the fight to build the VA Outpatient Clinic now located in Oakland Park and the VA Hospital in Palm Beach, Florida.  We were successful in both projects.  We are also responsible for the “Handicap Parking” signs that you see in all of the public and shopping areas.  That was a campaign that was started here in Florida and has spread throughout the country.  Our campaign for a nursing home here in Florida was completed in 2001 at the opening of the “Sandy” Ninninger Veterans’ State Nursing Home located in Pembroke Pines.

We are constantly on the watch for legislation affecting the Veteran and we keep our member organizations informed so that they may act accordingly.  There are many other things that are done for the Veterans, such as giving them personal attention and personal gifts that are not supplied by the hospital.

We have arranged parades and other celebrations on the appropriate holidays and invited participation by our local schools and other groups.

Our actions for the Veterans are too numerous to mention, but we are always there for them.  We need your input.  All veterans are welcome.  Please join us on the 3rd Tuesday of the Month.  Meetings are currently held at the Oakridge Outpatient Clinic, 5599 N. Dixie Hwy., adjacent to the Oakland Park Clinic on the second floor at 9:15 a.m.  Coffee and pastries are served.
